Wow!
This year is flying and summer is nearly here, so we all want to look and feel our best for that good weather and that beach holiday we have booked.
We probably all have goals and plans of what we want to do and what we want to achieve but how long will it last? Will we achieve it and how? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves.
Don’t worry most people are in this situation and even those with the greatest of intentions and high motivation will fall off the wagon at some point.
One of the main problems is that many of us think that joining a gym is the answer to all of our problems, or going for a jog a couple of times a week, but like I have said before this soon becomes a chore and then we stop because we are bored or we are not getting support and motivation from anybody else. We also think that because we are training, whether it be a swim, power walk, jog etc. we can eat what we want because we will burn it off. This isn't the case! 80% of your results will come from your nutrition; training only helps speed things up.
When it comes to having the body you want and living a healthy lifestyle, we can relate to cars. You wouldn't put diesel in an unleaded car so why do it to your body?
It is important we fuel the body correctly and use this fuel correctly in order to function correctly. It’s a no brainer, if we fuel our bodies with fresh, natural goodness such as fruit, veg and protein and eat all food groups in moderation like recommended, we will live a healthier, happier life that’s packed full of energy, better sleep and well being etc.
Nevertheless, if we fuel our body with processed rubbish loaded with calories, salt and saturated fat amongst other things we become tired and lethargic which impacts on our daily routines, sleeping patterns and the way we look and feel as well as leading to health problems in later life.
Don’t get me wrong I am not saying you can’t have something naughty once in a while but make sure it isn't all the time. Having a cheat meal once a week is allowed and more likely to keep you on track as it’s something you will look forward to after being good for 90% of the week. Just remember though it’s a cheat meal, not a cheat day or week!
Also remember, eat like a cave man….if it ran, swam, flew or came from the ground eat it if not bin it!
Here are a few items I recommend you incorporate into your diet, whether it is every day or just a couple of times a week.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil increases metabolism and provides the body with vital good fats which helps burn more energy to help drop body fat. It also boosts the immune system and aids with digestion, as well as provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve hair and skin, dental quality and bone strength.
Use coconut oil when cooking or have a spoonful mixed with cinnamon to reduce sugar cravings.
Tulsi Tea
Tulsi is a powerful adaptogen. It helps the body relieve stress and is a natural sleep aid which improves fat burning naturally. It also boosts the immune system, assists in maintaining a healthy metabolism and improves stamina. This herb is packed with free radical fighting anti-oxidants and beneficial phytochemical compounds which help to maintain healthy eye sight, improve joint support and is beneficial to those who suffer with IBS, Chrohn’s Disease and digestive disorders as it possessesanti-inflammatory properties.
Drink 1-2 cups of Tulsi Tea in the evening before bed; do not drink before 2pm. Tulsi Tea is also available in the form of a powdered capsule.
Water
Your body is composed of around 60% water which helps maintain the balance of body fluids such as digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature. Therefore it is a vital ingredient in everyday life. Drinking water also helps energise muscles because without it cells will shrivel which can result in muscle fatigue causing performance to suffer. Water is great for healthy skin, along with maintaining normal bowel habits and cleansing the kidneys, keeping them in good working order. In addition, water can also help control calories as sometimes when we are dehydrated our bodies think we are hungry so we tend to reach for the bad foods.
Try to drink at least 3 litres of water per day. Take a bottle with you where ever you go especially when food shopping and make sure you always have water if you are training otherwise you will become dehydrated.
Fish Oils
Fish oil is one of the most important supplements you can take. It provides essential fat from the Omega-3 fatty acids it is made up of and significantly impacts your ability to lose body fat and build muscle. It also decreases inflammation, enhancing the body’s composition and improves insulin sensitivity and metabolism.
Try to take2-3 capsules with each main meal.
Greens
Dark green leafy vegetables are probably the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. They are a rich source of vitamins and minerals and even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats. Greens have very little carbohydrate in them, with the carbohydrates they do contain being packed in layers of fibre making them slower to digest having little impact on blood glucose levels. Greens also promote natural cleansing functions of the body, they strengthen cells and deodorise the body and protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age related problems. They also help to detoxify oestrogen and get rid of leg and bum fat.
A great way to incorporate greens into your daily diet is with a greens drink. Have one first thing in the morning and another one if required in the afternoon. Otherwise accompany other foods with leafy greens, they go with almost anything.
Does a car burn more fuel driving at a constant speed or stopping and starting? The answer is stopping and starting of course. This is exactly like your training. All forms of exercise are good for you in some way and different methods suit different people. Running and jogging are great if you want to build up stamina for something such as a 10k run, swimming is great to relax and possibly get rid of those bingo wings but if its effective all over results you are after then add a 25 minute circuit to your routine 3 times a week. This combined with good nutrition and the tips above will have you dropping the inches you require in no time and giving you the body you have always wanted.
